Cantor Search Update: Three accomplished individuals are vying to become Beth Shalom’s Cantor. Each of the Hazzans has been invited to co-officiate alongside Rabbi Shelby over the next several weeks. Everyone is encouraged to come listen to each Cantor as they conduct a Friday and Saturday Shabbat service. Your participation is important to the process. The schedule is as follows: February 10-11 Hazzan Harris Shore, Rabbi Shelby February 17-18 Hazzan Paul Dorman, Rabbi Shelby February 24-25 Hazzan Lance Tapper, Rabbi Shelby Kid’s Shabbat – Friday, February 10th, 7:00 p.m. Songs and a story for children ages 4 through 8. Help your children learn about Jewish tradition! Come join us! Join us for a Tu B’Shevat seder followed by a potluck dinner tonight, Wednesday, February 8th at 6:00 p.m. This will take the place of our monthly Friday evening potluck for February. February 18, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – Beth Shalom presents Shabbaton, A Day of Study. Crypto-Jews: Who are they? What is their history? The next Movie Matinee at Beth Shalom will take place on Wednesday, February 22nd at 2:00 sharp. We will be presenting “A Day in October,” a WWII suspense drama about a Jewish family hiding in Sweden and the relationship that transpires between the young, beautiful daughter and a Gentile resistance fighter, as well as the father’s decision while working at a Nazi arms factory. This is another Must-See, produced by the makers of the well-known “Babette’s Feast.”
Beginning Hebrew Beginning Hebrew will be taught on Sundays at 12:30 starting on February 26th . This class is for anyone who would like to learn the alef-bet and how to read. Emphasis is on Biblical Hebrew and prayers. If you are considering conversion and have not yet had Hebrew, this class is required. Please do two things: 1) call the office to sign up (fees are negotiable) and 2) order the book Aleph Isn’t Tough by Linda Motzkin and bring the book to class. Learning Hebrew is not only fun but it will open up a whole new world of Jewish study, and make the prayer book accessible. Come and join us! Taught by Rabbi Shelby. The Feinberg Lecture Series of Whittier College has invited Senator George J. Mitchell to speak on “The Implications of the Arab Spring for Peace in the Middle East” on Tuesday, February 28th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts. On Wednesday, February 29th, the Book Discussion Group will be meeting at Maxine’s house to discuss “The Dovekeepers” by Alice Hoffman. In March the group will discuss “Hare with the Amber Eyes” by Edmund deWaal. Location has not yet been decided.
The Thursday session of Study With the Rabbi is moving to evenings in an effort to make it available to more attendees. Our next class will be on Thursday, March 1st at 7:00 p.m. Our topic is Halakhah/Jewish Law. We will look at the role that halakhah plays in our lives and learn where the Conservative Movement stands on this important issue. Come and join our lively discussion! You have saved the date, now it is time to make your reservations for the 2012 Annual Women’s Forum, featuring a special one-woman performance by actress Elaine Rembrandt. This year Sisterhood is pleased to announce that Rita Rubin has been selected as “The Woman Who Makes a Difference” to represent Beth Shalom. Let's all plan to attend to support Rita and Beth Shalom. Reservations are $40.00 per person. RSVP to Eileen Baptista. Make out your check to "Jewish Federation" and send it to Beth Shalom by March 5th. Late reservations are $50.00 per person.
